Columnstore Indexes in SQL Server 2014

In SQL Server 2012 memory optimized columnstore indexes were first introduced. Despite the query performance improvements obtained using columnstore indexes they had one significant disadvantage – they couldn’t be updated directly. In SQL Server 2014 this limitation has been removed from the columnstore indexes. To find out more about this and other changes to the columnstore indexes refer to here.

Premium Windows Azure SQL Database

A new Premium service for Windows Azure SQL Database that delivers more predictable performance for business-critical applications has recently been released. A white paper has been released which provides an overview of the Premium service for SQL Database and makes recommendations on how to determine the best reservation size for a Premium database. In addition, guidance is provided on how to tune your SQL Database application to get the most from the Premium service. You can find this white paper here.

Resource Governor Monitoring Reports

Resource Governor is a feature first introduced in SQL Server 2008 that can manage the consumption of CPU and memory resources. The SQL Server Premier Field team have developed a report that can measure the current state of Resource Governor usage and the current activity that is taking place.
