Welcome to the September newsletter from Australia's leading SQL Server Consultants and Trainers
Over the last few months there has been a lot happening around the WARDY IT Solutions office. For starters we have opened a brand new office in Hobart to complement our existing office in Brisbane and Sydney. As you may have seen in various different trade magazines, WARDY IT Solutions won the Microsoft Data Management Partner of the Year. If you are travelling on QANTAS over the next month make sure you check out the QANTAS in-flight magazine where you will see recognition of this achievement.
Although a lot has been happening as we continue to grow and clearly establish ourselves as the leading Microsoft SQL Server consultants and trainers in Australia, there is also a lot happening with the next release of SQL Server. SQL Server 2008 R2 is the next version of SQL Server that is scheduled for release in first half of 2010. This release is an existing release especially with the release of the powerful data analysis feature known as Project Gemini.
To assist organisations to start preparing for the next version of SQL Server, WARDY IT Solutions has designed a one hour lunchtime overview to provide a hot-lap of some of the new functionality that will be available in SQL Server 2008 R2. We are making this free presentation (including a free sandwich platter) available for a limited number of Brisbane sessions until the end of November.
WARDY IT Solutions has also designed a one-day readiness review to ensure that your SQL Server environment is ready for the upgrade to SQL Server 2008 R2. SQL Server 2008 RC2 is the next version of SQL Server. SQL Server 2008 RC provides an even more scalable data platform with comprehensive tools for managing databases and applications, improving the quality of data and empowering users to build rich analyses and reports using tools they are already familiar with. The first Community Technology Preview (CTP) for SQL Server 2008 R2 can be downloaded from here.
Backup, Integrity Check and Index Optimization
Ola Hallengren has released a new copy of his Backup, Integrity Check and Index Optimization scripts. These scripts are a simple maintenance solution that is easily deployable, has extensive logging and has the features that often are needed in an enterprise environment. The script can be downloaded from here.
Free SQL Server Breakfast in Canberra
If you are in Canberra, make sure you don't miss this Free breakfast event to see how you can leverage your investment in SQL Server. WARDY IT Solutions will be holding a free Breakfast event in Canbeera on Thursday the 15th of October that will demonstrate how to utilise the Business Intelligence features in SQL Server. SQL Down Under Code Camp is a Free SQL Server community-driven event which is held at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga. It is a great opportunity for people of all interests across the Microsoft data platform to come together in one location and see some of Australia's best presenters. This year’s event is being held on the weekend of the 10th and 11th of October. WARDY IT Solutions will once again be organising the Espresso van on the Saturday morning so make sure you get there early. For more details refer to here.
Plan Caching in SQL Server 2008
Microsoft have recently released a whitepaper that explains how SQL Server 2008 allocates memory for plan caching, how query batches are cached and suggests best practices on maximizing reuse of cached plans. It also explains scenarios in which batches are recompiled, and gives best practices for reducing or eliminating unnecessary recompilations and for minimizing plan cache pollution. This whitepaper can be found here.

High Availability with SQL Server 2008
Microsoft has released a new white paper describes the technologies available in SQL Server 2008 that can be used as part of a high-availability strategy to protect critical data. As well as describing the technologies in detail, the white paper also discusses the various causes of downtime and data loss, and how to evaluate and balance requirements and limitations when planning a high-availability strategy involving SQL Server 2008. Crystal Reports to Reporting Services
