I have spent the last two weeks on holidays with my family in Lucca, Italy. When in Europe I am always amazed by the age of the buildings and how they are still standing after so long.
Whilst in Lucca, I took an architectural tour with a stonemason who explained the reason that so many buildings are standing today is the ongoing upkeep from expert trades people (and why so many are also veiled with scaffolding). Without this ongoing maintenance many of buildings would be ruins.
